Personal and Powerful

I have always made it a policy in my blogs to avoid writing reviews and in the last five years or so, since I started the blogs, I have only written two, one for trumpet and one for ophicleide; I have never written one for tuba and probably never will.

In the past few years there has been a surge in the number of solo trumpet CDs released and many of them have been wonderful, but in most cases a piece of the puzzle has been missing; in the new CD, SOLO, with Italian trumpet player Marco Pierobon, the puzzle is complete. Marco Pierobon has the power of Bud Herseth, the 19th century awareness of Timofei Dokshizer, the technical freedom of Rafael Mandez and the great lead player skill of Harry James. But there is more!

All of these great pieces can certainly stand-alone, but Marco's versatility in these performances is absolutely amazing; quite simply, all the various styles represented are exactly right. But there is still one more thing that needs to be pointed out: Marco is Italian and as well the comparisons with the great trumpet players mentioned above, he has that visceral passionate musicality that we associate with Luciano Pavarotti. For example, every time I listen to the THEME FOR TRUMPET by Michele Mangani it makes the hairs on my arms stand up.

By the way Michele Mangani is the conductor of the Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche (Marche Wind Orchestra), which is the very able band accompanying this album.

In all fairness I have to disclose Marco was one of my students in the mid 90s when I was working with the brass of the Italian Youth Orchestra at the Fiesole Scuola di Musica in Toscana. I'm sure I haven't allowed that association to influence this review. Please listen to this remarkable CD and judge for yourself.

Marco Pierobon, Trompetenlehrer in Bozen und Mitglied des Gomalan Brass Quintetts, hat mit der CD “SoLo” sozusagen seine eigene Solo-CD herausgebracht. Doch natuerlich spielt er nicht allein, sondern wird unterstuetzt vom Marche Wind Orchestra (Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche). Wobei “unterstuetzt” der Sache nicht gerecht wird. Die Kraft, die technische Finesse und die Sicherheit Pierobons paaren sich perfekt mit der sinfonischen Musikalitaet des Blasorchesters. Das Repertoire hat es in sich: Alexander Arutiunians “Trompetenkonzert in As Dur”, Oskar Boehmes “Trompetenkonzert”, James Cornows “Concertpiece”, Gerorge Gershwins “Rhapsody in Blue”, oder Allen Vizzuttis “American Jazz Suite” - jedes Werk ist eine Herausforderung. Und Pierobon meistert sie stilistischer. Herausragend ist aber das eher unbekannte Werk von Michele Mangani, dem Komponisten und Dirigenten des Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche. Denn “Theme for Trumpet” hat dieser fuer den Trompetensolisten komponiert. Und die Einspielung verspricht Gaensehaut.

Ma naturalmente egli non suona da solo, ma è sostenuto dall'Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche, dove "sostenuto" no è la parola corretta. La forza, la finezza tecnica e la sicurezza di Pierobon si accoppiano perfettamente con la musicalità sinfonica dell'orchestra di fiati.

Il repertorio comprende: Alexander Arutiunian "Trumpet Concerto in la bemolle maggiore", Oskar Boehme "Concerto per Tromba", James Curnow "Concertpiece", Gerorge Gershwin "Rhapsody in Blue ", o Allen Vizzutti "American Jazz Suite" - ogni opera è una

sfida. E Pierobon le padroneggia completamente. Eccezionale è però anche l'opera piuttosto sconosciuta di Michele Mangani, compositore e direttore dell'Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche. Perché "Theme for Trumpet" è stato espressamente composto per il trombettista. E la registrazione è da pelle d'oca.

But of course he does not play alone but is supported by the Marche Wind Orchestra (Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche). Where "supported" is not the correct word. The Pierobon's power, the technical finesse and sureness mate perfectly with the musicality of the symphonic wind orchestra. The repertoire has it all: Alexander Arutiunian "Trumpet Concerto in A flat major," Oskar Boehme's "Trumpet Concerto", James Cornows "Concert Piece" Gerorge Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue", or Allen Vizzuttis "American Jazz Suite" – each work is a challenge . Pierobon masters the style of eachone. Outstanding is the relatively unknown work by Michele Mangani, composer and conductor of the Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche. Because "Theme for Trumpet" was composed the trumpet soloist. And the recording promises goose bumps.

Marco Pierobon is one of the world's famous trumpet players. He has performed as soloist with the orchestras of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, English Chamber Orchestra, Max-Plank-Philarmonie Muenchen, Junge Philarmonie Salzburg, Marchigiana Philarmonic and with the orchestras of Mantua, Bolzano and Vicenza, in addition to the Marche wind orchestra and the State Police Military wind band. Marco has also collaborated as “Principal Trumpet” with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Filarmonica della Scala Orchestra. He is the lead trumpet of the famous brass quintet Gomalan Brass and since 2007 he has been Trumpet Professor at the Conservatories of Bolzano and Reggio Emilia, Italy, and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

This is truly a wonderful CD recording; Marco Pierobon is in the highest bracket of trumpet players worldwide. The choice of repertoire is very well thought out and I suspect Marco has at least half an eye on the listeners' wishes as well as the soloist's. In any case the choice is spot on, in my opinion, and clearly demonstrates the soloist's superb qualities and musicianship.

It was with keen anticipation that I placed Marco's CD, “Solo” into my PC. The immediate response is WOW!

The sound, the energy, the sheer music I hear is quite breath-taking. The disc opens with two major Concerti – first up is the Arutiunian Concerto. It's a stunning opening and one which is certain to make the listener sit up and really take notice. The virtuosity, the sheer brilliance, the fine playing in reflective passages – Marco Pierobon demonstrates that he has everything in his locker that is required to be a stand-out performer. The music making is of the highest possible level. The next track is the Oskar Bohme Trumpet Concerto (op.18). This further reveals what a class act Marco is – the music just flows and the feeling one gets is that the trumpet playing is effortless. We all know that this is not the case, but the really special performers can make it sound as if it is. Marco is one of those special performers. Track three features James Curnow's Concertpiece. Again wonderful playing (and listening), many contrasting styles on show here in this seven minute tour de force.

Then we come to what is possibly the centre-piece of the CD, the Timofei Dorkshitzer arrangement of Geroge Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. This performance is guaranteed to blow the listener away, the sheer virtuosity nature, the music, the versatility – suffice to say it has everything.

We are then treated into two contrasting tracks, the exciting and a high velocity rendition of Goedicke's Concert Study, followed by a warm and soulful performance of Theme for Trumpet by Michele Mangani, arranged by Marco. These two tracks again demonstrate the full depth of Marco's musicianship.

The concluding track is a master stroke of programming and brings this superb record to a fitting finale. In Allen Vizzutti's American Jazz Suite, Marco, with seemingly no effort  whatsoever, transfers to jazz style, therefore leaning us in no doubt of his crossover credentials. A wonderful conclusion to a truly wonderful recording.

The Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche conducted by Michele Mangani is the accompanying orchestra and deserves much praise for first class accompanying throughout. Saving the last words for Marco Pierobon, a true world class performance from a superb trumpet player and musician. Bravo Marco!

Questa è veramente un CD meraviglioso, Marco Pierobon è nella fascia più alta di trombettisti a livello mondiale. La scelta del repertorio è molto ben pensata e ho il sospetto che Marco abbia rivolto almeno la metà dello sguardo ai desideri degli ascoltatori così come a quelli del solista. In ogni caso la scelta è azzeccata e, a mio parere, dimostra chiaramente le superbe qualità e la musicalità del solista.

Con appassionata aspettativa ho messo il cd di Marco, "Solo" nel mio PC. La risposta immediata è stata: WOW!

Il suono, l'energia, la purezza della musica che sento è mozzafiato.

Il disco si apre con due importanti Concerti – in primis il Concerto Arutiunian. Si tratta di un'apertura straordinaria, che lascia il segno nell'ascoltatore. Il virtuosismo, la genialità pura, l'ottima esecuzione nei passaggi più espressivi - Marco Pierobon dimostra di avere nel suo “armadietto” tutto ciò di cui necessita un esecutore di spicco. La musicalità è del massimo livello possibile.

La traccia successiva è il concerto per tromba (op.18) di Oskar Bohme. Questo rivela ulteriormente la classe di Marco - la musica fluisce e si ha la sensazione che la tromba non richieda alcuno sforzo per essere suonata. Sappiamo tutti che non è così, ma gli artisti davvero speciali possono far sembrare che lo sia. Marco è uno di questi interpreti speciali.

La traccia tre è il Concertpiece di James Curnow. Di nuovo un'esecuzione ed ascolto meravigliosi e stili contrastanti in questo

Tour de Force di sette minuti..

Poi veniamo a quello che è forse il fulcro del CD, l'arrangiamento di Timofei Disposizione della Rhapsody in Blue di Geroge Gershwin. Questa performance garantisce di “soffiare via l'ascoltatore”, la pura natura virtuosistica, la musicalità, la versatilità - basti dire che c'è tutto.

Ci sono poi due tracce contrastanti, l'emozionante Concert Study di Goedicke reso ad altissima velocità, seguito da un'escuzione calda e piena di sentimento del Theme fo Trumpet di Michele Mangani. Questi due brani di nuovo dimostrano tutta la profondità musicale di Marco.

Il brano conclusivo è un colpo da maestro di programmazione e porta questo superba registrazione ad un degno finale. In American Jazz Suite di Allen Vizzutti, Marco, apparentemente senza sforzo alcuno, si trasferisce nello stile jazzistico, non lasciandoci quindi nessun dubbio sulle sue credenziali “crossover”. Una meravigliosa conclusione di un vero e proprio meraviglioso CD.

L'Orchestra di Fiati delle Marche diretta da Michele Mangani merita molti elogi per la classe con cui accompagna il solista.

Le ultime parole per Marco Pierobon, una prestazione di livello mondiale di un magnifico trombettista e musicista. Bravo Marco!
